Quests, which must not be confused with Scenarios, are character-based. There are two types of quests : battle goals, which are scenario-oriented, and personal quest, which is life-oriented (for the "life" of your character).
Personal Quests
Personal Quests is a game concept that is tied to character retirement and figures in the Gloomhaven Campaign, but is excluded from Jaws of the Lion. They represent the ultimate goal of the character, i.e. what it wants to achieve in his adventure life and the core reason why it got into it in the first place.
Rule summary
“ | When a character is created, he or she is dealt [with] two random personal quest cards and chooses one to keep, returning the other to the personal quest deck. A character’s personal quest is their primary reason for participating in a party. | ” |
— Gloomhaven Rulebook p. 38
|
“ | If a character currently fulfills the conditions of his or her personal quest and is visiting Gloomhaven, the character must announce retirement. The character may perform any other town activities beforehand, but he or she cannot play any new scenarios using a character with a fulfilled personal quest. The character has accomplished his or her dreams and has no more motivation to go exploring monster-filled ruins. | ” |

Battle Goals
Battle Goals are cards drawn at the start of a scenario, representing targets needed to be achieved in a scenario by a character.
Rule summary
“ | At the beginning of every scenario, each character receives two battle goal cards in secret and chooses one to keep, discarding the other. If the scenario is successfully completed and the character meets the criteria of the chosen card, he or she will earn a number of check-marks as specified on the bottom of the card. [...]. If the scenario resulted in failure, the character receives nothing from his or her battle goal card, regardless of whether the goal was achieved. Players can keep track of their battle goal progress using notes if necessary. Players should keep their battle goals secret from one another until the scenario is over. | ” |

FAQ
- Allied monsters do not count towards meeting your battle goal's objective.[reference 1]
- Being exhausted at the end of the scenario does not change the success of your battle goal's objective or not, e.g. you still had a certain number of hit points before being exhausted for lack of cards.[reference 2]
- You select your battle goal after reading the scenario's introduction (thus knowing the objective or special rules), but before choosing what equipment you will bring.[reference 3]
Using an item for Professional means it has an effect in a certain round. Iron Helmet is considered used every time you would draw an (X2), for example[reference 4].
